Reviving Old Lamp Shades

Lamp shades are one of the easiest items to upcycle, and the results can completely transform a room. Whether you have a dated shade that doesn't match your decor or a damaged one that needs refreshing, this guide will help you create something beautiful.

This project requires minimal tools and can be completed in an afternoon. The techniques can also be applied to other fabric-based projects. For more home decor ideas, check out our Rustic Mirror Frame guide.

Materials Needed

  • Old lamp shade (any shape or size)
  • Fabric of your choice (lightweight works best)
  • Fabric glue or spray adhesive
  • Scissors and measuring tape
  • Trim, ribbon, or decorative elements (optional)
  • Clothespins or clips for holding fabric

Step-by-Step Process

1

Remove Old Covering

Carefully remove the old fabric or paper covering from your lamp shade. If it's glued on, gently peel it away. If it's sewn, carefully cut the stitches. Keep the frame intact - this is what you'll be covering. Clean the frame thoroughly to remove any residue.

2

Measure & Cut Fabric

Measure your shade's dimensions. For a cylindrical shade, measure the height and circumference. For a tapered shade, measure the top and bottom circumferences and the height. Add 1-2 inches to all measurements for overlap and trimming.

Cut your fabric to size. If using patterned fabric, ensure the pattern is oriented correctly. For tapered shades, you may need to create a pattern by rolling the shade on paper and tracing.

3

Apply Fabric

Apply fabric glue or spray adhesive to the shade frame. Start at one seam and carefully wrap the fabric around, smoothing as you go. Use clothespins or clips to hold the fabric in place while the adhesive sets.

Work slowly and carefully to avoid wrinkles. For the top and bottom edges, fold the fabric over the frame edges and glue in place. Trim excess fabric carefully.

4

Add Trim (Optional)

Add decorative trim to the top and bottom edges for a finished look. Ribbon, braiding, or decorative tape all work well. Glue trim in place, covering the raw fabric edges. This adds both style and durability.

5

Finishing Touches

Let the adhesive dry completely (follow product instructions). Check for any loose areas and re-glue if needed. Add any additional decorative elements like fabric flowers, buttons, or embroidery. Reattach the shade to your lamp base.
