Creating Art from Time

Vintage clock faces have a unique aesthetic that makes them perfect for wall art. Whether the clock mechanism is broken or you simply want to repurpose the face, this project creates stunning decorative pieces. Clock faces work beautifully in groups or as standalone statement pieces.

This project is similar to frame-based projects but with the added character of clock numerals and design. For related frame projects, check out our Rustic Mirror Frame guide.

Materials Needed

  • Vintage clock face (with or without mechanism)
  • Paint (chalk paint or acrylic)
  • Sandpaper (if refinishing)
  • Decorative elements (optional): stencils, decals, or freehand designs
  • Clear finish (wax or polyurethane)
  • Picture hanging hardware

Step-by-Step Process

1

Remove Mechanism

If your clock still has a working or broken mechanism, carefully remove it. Keep the hands if they're decorative, or remove them if you want a cleaner look. Clean the face thoroughly, removing any dust, grime, or old adhesive.

2

Prepare Surface

Lightly sand the clock face if it has a glossy finish or if you want to remove existing paint. Wipe away all dust. If you're painting over a dark surface, consider applying a primer coat first, especially if using light colors.

For a distressed look, you can intentionally add some wear marks before painting. This works well with techniques from our Paint Techniques Masterclass.

3

Paint Base Color

Apply your base color paint. Chalk paint works beautifully for vintage looks, while acrylic paint offers more color options. Apply 2-3 thin coats, allowing each to dry completely. Work carefully around the numerals if you want to preserve them.

If you want to highlight the numerals, you can paint around them carefully, or paint over them and then repaint them in a contrasting color. Use painter's tape for clean edges if needed.

4

Add Decorative Elements

This is where you can get creative. Add stenciled designs, freehand artwork, or decorative decals. Consider adding text, patterns, or images that complement your decor. You could also distress the paint to reveal the original finish underneath.

For a minimalist look, leave the face mostly plain with just the numerals showing. For a more decorative approach, add florals, geometric patterns, or inspirational quotes.

5

Apply Finish

Once all paint and decorative elements are completely dry, apply a clear protective finish. Wax gives a soft, matte sheen perfect for vintage looks, while polyurethane provides more durability. Apply evenly and let dry completely.

6

Mount & Display

Attach picture hanging hardware to the back. For heavier clock faces, use appropriate wall anchors. Consider creating a gallery wall with multiple clock faces of different sizes, or use a single large clock face as a statement piece.

Design Variations

  • Vintage distressed: Paint and distress for an aged look
  • Modern minimalist: Clean lines with bold colors
  • Botanical: Add floral or nature-inspired designs
