Transforming Vintage Jewelry Boxes

Old jewelry boxes often have beautiful shapes and solid construction but outdated finishes. With some creativity and basic techniques, you can transform them into stunning pieces that rival expensive store-bought options. This guide covers multiple transformation methods, from simple painting to advanced decoupage.

Whether you find a plain wooden box or an ornate vintage piece, the techniques in this guide will help you create something unique. For similar small storage projects, check out our Upcycling Old Suitcases guide.

Materials Needed

  • Sandpaper (various grits: 120, 220, 400)
  • Paint or stain (chalk paint works well for vintage looks)
  • Decoupage medium and decorative paper (optional)
  • New hardware (hinges, clasps, handles)
  • Fabric or velvet for interior lining
  • Foam or padding for ring holders
  • Clear finish (polyurethane or wax)

Transformation Techniques

1. Paint Transformation

Start by removing all hardware and cleaning the box thoroughly. Lightly sand the surface to help paint adhere. Apply primer if painting over dark wood or changing colors dramatically. Use techniques from our Paint Techniques Masterclass for professional results.

Consider using multiple colors - paint the exterior one color and the interior another for contrast. Add decorative details with stencils or freehand painting. Finish with a clear protective coat.

2. Decoupage Technique

Decoupage allows you to add beautiful patterns, images, or designs to your jewelry box. Choose decorative paper, fabric, or even maps and photographs. Cut your design to fit, apply decoupage medium to both the surface and the back of your paper, then smooth it on.

Apply multiple coats of decoupage medium over the design, sanding lightly between coats for a smooth finish. This technique works beautifully on flat surfaces like box lids.

3. Hardware Upgrade

Replacing old hardware can dramatically change a jewelry box's appearance. Choose new hinges, clasps, or decorative handles that complement your new finish. Measure existing hardware carefully to ensure replacements fit properly.

For a luxurious touch, consider adding a lock mechanism or upgrading to brass or antique-style hardware. Polish or paint hardware to match your design aesthetic.

4. Interior Lining

Line the interior with fabric or velvet for a luxurious feel. Measure each compartment carefully and cut fabric with extra for folding under edges. Use fabric glue or spray adhesive to attach. For ring holders, cut foam to size and cover with fabric.

Choose colors that complement your exterior design. Velvet adds elegance, while patterned fabric can add personality. Ensure fabric is cleanable or replaceable for maintenance.

Finishing Touches

  • Add decorative trim, ribbon, or braiding around edges for elegance
  • Install a mirror inside the lid for convenience
  • Add felt pads to the bottom to protect surfaces
  • Consider adding a small drawer or hidden compartment
